The Department of English was founded with the establishment of the College in 1966. The Major Course was introduced in the year 1986. The Department had functioned with temporary faculty until ,when the first HoD, Late Dr. Suresh Kotoky joined as the permanent lecturer. Besides Dr Kotoky, Mrs. Ranjita Bhattacharjee and Mr. Niren Baruah nurtured the nascent department and helped it to reach the position it has today. Currently, there are four permanent and one contractual teacher in the department and offers major and pass courses. Teaching is conducted in a congenial environment with remedial teaching, personalized care and mentoring offered. Job oriented workshops are organized and students are encouraged to explore their potentials and choose non- traditional career options. The department has been able to show consistently good results with class in the batch of 2015 with the university rank starting at 16.
Vision and Mission of the Department :
Literature is the window into man's soul and the world. It provides a broadening of mental horizons and creates a worldview. We in the department believe in the holistic development of our students. We emphasize teaching of English as a language and also as a subject. We not only try to prepare our students for the job market but for life- to grow as responsible, independent, confident and compassionate human beings in an informal and friendly environment.

As an academic discipline, Political Science describes, debates and interrogates national as well as international politics.

INFRASTRUCTURE AND FACILITIES:
The Department is equipped with a very well infrastructure. It has two well furnished departmental rooms; one is used for the teachers’ common room and other is used as departmental library. One Desktop computer with internet connectivity is available for teachers and student to avail the profit of internet. One printer is there to perform the exam related works and supply students with useful hand outs. Wi-Fi connectivity is also available for teachers to remain connected to outer world.
The departmental library is equipped with more than 300 text and reference books from where teachers and students borrow books. Apart from reference books and text books, it has a huge collection on journals and magazines donated by the faculty members of the department. The department also possess a huge collection of E-books and a digital archive of Classic Movies related to the curriculum. The Department manages a Wall Magazine named News Nuggets.
