The Department of Economics, along with Bahona College itself, was established with a general objective to impart higher education in Economics in North-East Jorhat, on 15th July, 1966. Subsequently, with a vision of offering intensive higher education in the field of economics with special emphasis on the orientation of emerging job opportunities and local socio-economic issues as well, the major course in Economics was commenced since the academic year 1974-75. To this date, the department has traversed years long offering Economics as major to 38 Batches and as core 46 and to its credit, apart from teaching economics in higher secondary courses, this department has produced more than two thousand graduates with economics as honours/major and many more with economics as core subject.

The department, to orient the students with local issues, accomplishes some field survey based project works and seminal presentation, recently striding for publication, under the organizational banner of Bahona College Economic Study and Research Center, established in 2011, and Baohona College Economic Association, as its students’ wing, originating to the department’s older organization Bahona College Economic Forum, established in the year 1996.

Department of Economics organizes time to time counseling and motivation programmes and also associates career orientation courses and bridge courses to enable the students to pace with recent trend of higher education in economics and in job markets as well.

To complement the Vision Statement of the College through attaining academic excellence in Economics and promoting a global outlook with insight in local socio-economic environment.

Mission
Making best effort for curricular transactions in Economics and associating skill based courses, We emphasize orienting students on emerging job avenues, introducing local socio-economic issues and developing research temperament.
